Parties, Classes, Decorations and More at The Dance Place

We had a terrific Valentine's Party on February 11. Lots of people showed up in pinks and reds and got a ticket to put into the drawing for various small prizes. Lucky winners were Kitty, Sandra Timmermans, B Kelly, Ruby Weston, Rick Callaway, Betty Freshour, David Hamilton and Debbie McFarland. Phillip was still recuperating from the flu and didn't participate much in the dancing, but Michael and Vickie got out there and led the Samba line dance magnificantly. Everyone seemed to be very appreciative of the new music Michael played for the evening. He plans to create several new playlists for the dances, so be sure to come on over to The Dance Place on Friday evenings from 8-10pm and enjoy good company, good dancing and great music.

Hats Off to Mary Lou Kyriacou and Phyllis Baker, who did a superb job of giving the studio that special Valentine's Day look. Mary Lou created some very lovely floral displays in the lobby and reception area. She seems to have a special touch when it comes to theme decorations, but her red-and-white arrangements backed by greens and browns in the tall vases in the entry area have truly been a pleasure to see every day. And Phyllis Baker found our "prince" of a frog, put some big ol' "give me a smacker" lips on him and used Mr. Frog to create a "fun" display of hearts with clever sayings. It's amazing to see what can be achieved by people with a decorative flair, a sense of style and an imagination that blends those traits together. Thanks, Phyllis and Mary Lou, for helping us maintain a beautiful and inviting atmosphere at the studio.

Preparations for our Gulf Coast Stars Dance Tournament and the USDSF National Qualifying Events for Salsa, Argentine Tango and Bachata are moving right along. We've been busy sending out invitations for folk to come and participate in these events which will both take place at the studio on Saturday, April 16, and have had a favorable response. The Gulf Coast Stars Dance Tournament features all the traditional Ballroom, Country Western, Latin, Showcase and Scholarship divisions for all age and skill levels from beginner to advanced. The USDSF National Qualifying Events are truly special as they are the "first ever" events of their kind being held in the USA. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners will qualify to represent the USA in the International Dance Organization (IDO) World Championships. Somebody will win the FIRST EVER title of USDSF National Salsa Champion. Somebody will win the FIRST EVER title of USDSF National Argentine Tango Champion. And somebody will win the FIRST EVER title of USDSF National Bachata Champion. Could one of those somebodies be YOU? The only way to find out is to enter. For complete details on either of these events, send a request to gcsdt@theplace2dance.com or USDSF-Events@theplace2dance.com.

Great Classes coming up in March. Phillip Stephens holds a level 4 Ballroom class on Wednesdays at 8pm. Because one February class got canceled due to illness, Phillip's current Foxtrot class will extend to the first Wednesday in March - 3/2. And Phillip's Cha Cha class will start on March 9th and run for the rest of the month. The 7pm Wednesday and 7pm Friday First Steps classes have been gaining momentum this year, and we expect to see all those "new" dancers out on the floor at our Friday Night Practice Parties in the near future. We added a Level 2 Ballroom class on Tuesdays at 7pm, and everyone in it raves about the class and Michael's teaching methods. It's the perfect spot for people who've taken the First Steps class or who have already done a bit of social dancing. Our Level 3 Ballroom class at 7pm on Fridays has also been a very popular item this year, and many people like learning new moves at 7pm that they can practice right away during our 8-10pm dance.

Remember - we now have online registration available. Just open our calendar/schedule and click on a class. When you find the one you'd like to register for, look for the "to register online click here" text. Click on that and follow the instructions and you will be registered in short order.

Our "Lost and Found" area in the hallway near the refreshment center is becoming overloaded with lost items that we have found. If you have anything here, please claim it at your earliest convenience. We cannot continue to "store" all those clothes and other items and plan to give them to a charity such as Purple Heart. Please drop in and claim your lost item by the end of February or it may be gone forever.

Get your "Irish" on, get your St. Paddy's green out and make sure you're feelin' lucky like a charm on Friday, March 18. A day late, but that's when we plan to celebrate St Patrick's Day. We'll be comin' up with some sort of special idea for that party that will reward those who get into the spirit of the evening, so start giving some thought to the prize-winning outfit you'll wear.

Happy Dancing and remember to check out our Facebook and Twitter pages and that
