What Does the New Year Offer?

Every "new" year brings so many opportunities to each of us that it's often a bit difficult to decide just which ones to take advantage of. So I say: Try everything that time permits! That way, you won't have as many regrets later on.

Right now, things are really "ramping up" at The Dance Place, so check out our calendar to see what classes and practice parties await you, and read on for a few items not yet listed on the schedule.

Phillip's Footsie
After undergoing joint replacement surgery on the big toe of my right foot on December 19, I've been out of commission while letting everything heal up. The doctor gave me some exercises to do during this recuperative period, and told me to do them aggressively several times per day. I did that, and also did a lot of walking until I got up to between 2 & 3 miles per day. It all helped quite a bit and things seem to be moving along quite nicely. I went to the doctor for a check up on 1/23, and he was really impressed with progress, saying that people don't get the degree of flexibility I now have until 3 months out from surgery and that, for just 5 weeks after surgery, I was doing fantastic. He released me to start teaching again, but has cautioned me to take it easy. I'm doing my best to follow the doctor's orders because I DEFINITELY don't want to go through this again. I thank everyone for all their best wishes and concern over my condition. Your thoughtfulness means a lot to me.

Second Saturday Dance
USA Dance Houston will hold their Second Saturday Dance at The Dance Place on Saturday, February 11. They have changed a few things about the party for 2012, such as the fact that the Pre-Dance Class is now free of charge. Yep - no charge for taking the 8-9pm class and then you get to enjoy the dance from 9pm-midnight. Their 2012 pricing is a bit different, too: $15 for non-members, $10 for members and still just $5 for youths and college students. The completely complimentary pre-dance class in February will be on the American Foxtrot and will be taught by William Ashworth. Come on out and enjoy the free class and the terrific dance afterward. See you on February 11 which, by the way, will be the USA Dance Valentine's Party

Wedding Bells
Nope, nobody I know of is getting married. However, if YOU know someone who is planning to take that sort of plunge, direct them to www.MyWedding.com where they can find virtually any sevice or product they might conceivably need for getting through the occasion. And, as of this week, they will also be able to find some great deals on dance lessons for learning that all-important "first dance". Naturally, those lessons will be available from The Dance Place via our soon to be displayed Showcase Page. We are really happy to make our services available on such a first class site for bridal couples and hope that you will help spread the word about our availability through that site.

Gulf Coast Stars
Save the date because we are gearing up to hold our 2012 Gulf Coast Stars Dance Tournament on Saturday, April 28, 2012. We will soon be releasing the details for this exciting event, so stay tuned for further information. The day will feature all levels of competition in both American and International styles. There will be all levels available so that even those brand new dancers will have a place to compete and we will move up through the ranks to categories for the highly advanced dancers. We will also offer some scholarship categories for dancers of all skill levels in various age groups. If you are interested in receiving more details about this exciting event, send an inquiry to philtex44@aol.com

Dance Tests and Examinations
Phillip Stephens is an Examiner and trainer for the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD). As such, he travels around the country at times to conduct dance examinations for both students and professionals. Phillip also provides training in all levels of American and International styles of dance for people who wish to either take student Medal Tests or gain professional academic qualifications in dance. If you are interested in taking a dance exam of some sort, please let Phillip know. He is in the preliminary stages of planning an examination session that will be held here at The Dance Place later in the year. The ISTD qualifications are available to anyone who wishes to participate in Medal Tests or who wishes to join the Imperial Society via the professional examinations process.
