2011 New Year Updates
The Dance Place has a busy schedule planned out for 2011. January sees the resumption of most of our classes along with a few new ones being added to the schedule.
On Tuesdays at 7pm, Michael Schedler is teaching a Second Steps / Pre Intermediate Ballroom class. This class is a good one to move into after learning the basics in the First Steps classes. You'll learn slightly more advanced patterns, improve your lead/follow techniques, work more on the posture and hold as well as improving footwork and leg actions.
At 7pm on Wednesdays, Michael Schedler is teaching a First Steps Introduction to Ballroom Dance class. This is where you learn the fundamentals of each dance, including the hold, the posture, the timing, some of the basic steps, how to lead or follow those steps, and how to respond with different partners.
8pm on Wednesdays sees the resumption of Phillip Stephens' Pre Intermediate Ballroom class that is now a Level 4 class. In January, Phillip will cover the Bolero, which is a sensual Latin dance based on a slow Rumba tempo. This particular class will start with basic actions to be sure everyone is familiar with them, and will work up to more advanced patterns. We will focus on styling, how to lead or follow and how to use the feet and legs to enhance the dance.
Another 8pm Wednesday class is our Country Western for Beginners series taught by Country Western Masters Division Champion dancer Vickie Dunn. Don't let her title scare you - Vickie is a pro at presenting material in a manner that is both relaxed and informative, and her students all "master" the moves very quickly. Dances covered are 2-Step, Waltz & Polka.
At 7pm on Friday, we offer a First Steps class that is alternately taught by Jill Banta and Vickie Dunn. The format for this class is just like the one taught by Michael Schedler on Wednesday.
Michael Schedler also teaches an Intermediate Ballroom Level 3 class at 7pm on Fridays that covers more intricate timings and provides more details about leading, following, footwork, leg actions and posture.
From 8-10pm on Fridays, The Dance Place hosts an "Open to All" Practice Party. A variety of pre-recorded music is played and dancers of all levels from beginners to highly advanced get out on the floor and "strutt their stuff". Come try it out. After all, you'll be hard pressed to find any other spot where $5 will get you 2 hours of fun with friends.
Rodeo Special: We are offering some special Country Western classes on Saturdays during February to help you prepare for the Rodeo. Class dates are February 5, 12, 19 and 26. The 1pm class will cover 2-Step, and the 2pm class will cover both Swing and Polka. Here's the special: You get the 2010 pricing for these classes, which is $40 per 4-week series. And, if you take BOTH classes, you get the second 4-week series for just $30. $70 bucks to learn 3 popular Country Western dances taught by Masters Division Champion Vickie Dunn? What a deal!
Well, we'll have more information about other great activities on our 2011 schedule in future newsletters. Hope you had wonderful holidays, and that you'll "stay tuned" to The Dance Place for info about dance and dance-related activities as the year progresses.
